Second Installment 2020 Property Taxes For Cook County Taxpayers Will Most Likely Be Delayed

Due to delays in the finalization of Cook County Board of Review tax appeals and certification of final assessments, Cook County property owners will most likely get more time to pay their 2020 second installment property tax bills.  The current due date for the 2020 second installment of property tax payments is August 2nd, but public comments to local media like Crain’s Chicago Business indicates that the scheduled due date for the second installment tax bills will be moved back to at least September 1st.

The Cook County Clerk’s Office – Tax Extension Unit reviews the Cook County Board of Review’s final certified assessments and the tax districts levy requests and determines the local tax rates to be applied before the second installment tax bills are issued.

Nicholas Mathiowdis, a spokesperson for Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle recently told Crain’s that the due date for the 2020 second installment due date is likely to be pushed back to September 1.  Mr. Mathiowdis stated that, “Nothing is set in stone yet, but that date [Sept. 1] is likely.  We should know the final due date sometime in July”.  He added that “This has been a difficult year for everyone, and (last year) taxpayers were allowed to pay until Oct. 1 without penalties or interest and will be afforded the same this year.”
