Reminder for Cook County 2022 Second Installment Tax Bills being due on December 1, 2023

The second installment 2022 real estate tax bills are now available online.  Cook County property owners can access their second installment 2022 tax bills by going on www.cookcountytreasurer.com, selecting the blue box labeled “Pay Online for Free” and entering the Property Index Number (PIN) or the address.

The Cook County Treasurer’s Office is planning to mail out 1.8 million second installment 2022 tax bills to property owners on or around November 1, 2023 with the second installment tax bills due on December 1, 2023.  There is no fee to pay online from bank accounts.  There is a 2.1% processing fee or those who pay with a credit card.  Property owners can print out their second installment bills and pay the tax bill at any Chase Bank branch location including those outside of Cook County.  Taxpayers can also pay their bills in person at the Cook County Treasurer’s Office at 118 N. Clark Street, Chicago.

Please note that the city of Chicago tax rates have increased while the tax rates in the northern townships of Cook County have declined due to the fact that 2022 was a triennial reassessment year for all properties located in the northern townships of Cook County and more assessment dollars were collected than in prior assessment years. The northern townships are properties located in Norwood Park, Barrington, Hanover, New Trier, Schaumburg, Elk Grove, Evanston, Palatine, Maine, Leyden, Northfield, Wheeling and Niles Townships.  For example, the tax rate for properties located in New Trier Township in Tax Code 23001 has decreased from 7.006% in 2021 to 5.855% in 2022.  In Niles Township, property located in Tax Code 24001 from 8.232% in 2021 to 7.520% in 2022.

For the 2023 assessment year, the Cook County Assessor is reassessing the south and west suburbs of Cook County.

The second installment 2022 tax bills are due on December 1, 2023 which is earlier than the second installment 2021 tax bills which were due on December 30, 2022.  Traditionally, the second installment bills were due by August 1.  Due to the inefficiencies of the Cook County Assessor’s Office in processing 2021 tax appeals and due to its technological issues, the second installment 2021 bills were delayed by almost five months.
